The “Erratic Jacket” Phenomenon
I have now seen Yellow Submarine way too many times now (exactly 8 and counting) and have noticed some bizarre errors. The funniest and most inexplicable one I will address here. I like to call it the “Paul’s Erratic Jacket” phenomenon. There are some other things I could call it, but they sounded even more stupid.
I have noticed a strange thing in regard to Paul’s jacket. Throughout the course of the movie, the color cycles between black, brown, and purple, with purple the dominant color. Once I even saw it turn sort of reddish.
The other part of the “Erratic Jacket” phenomenon is yet another odd cycle. The back of the jacket cycles between being solid, split (what do you call that?), and occasionally sort of in between. As with the color purple, the split appearance is dominant.
I have also noted that this continues after they put on the band uniforms. This has led me to believe that this cycle occurs simply by virtue of it being Paul’s.
Yes, I’m insane enough to notice this.
Another error I’ve noticed involves people’s reactions. I’ll give an example:
When they get out of the submarine in “Nowhere Land”, John is in front, followed by Ringo, George, and Paul in that order. Paul says “Let’s show him our motor,” and then they all stop while John turns around and says something about “You don’t want to be showing your motor to just anybody.”
Here is the point I am addressing. After John says whatever he says, George says “Yeah, but this is a nobody.” When he says that, he leans forward slightly, yet neither Paul nor Ringo seems to notice. In fact, they don’t react at all.
This sort of thing occurs frequently throughout the movie. I’ll probably find fault with something else soon, but for now, thanks for letting me waste your time.
